SinS 2013 Happiness!

The (Cyber) Bag of Weasels

bread and puppet

"About as much fun as a bag of weasels"...when I first saw this Irish adage, it made me think of the life of a writer: sometimes perilous, sometimes painful, certainly interesting. My paper journal has always been called "The Bag of Weasels." This is the Bag of Weasels' online home.

SinS 2013 Happiness!

I participated in Sultry in September this year, and it was my very first ficswap. That seems kind of crazy, as I have been playing in this fandom for eight years, but I usually can't commit absolutely to getting anything done that isn't related to teaching, grad school, or the SWG, and of course, absolute commitment is a requirement for a ficswap. With the summer more or less free this year, I decided to do SinS and am glad that I did.

First of all, I want to pimp like crazy Zeen's Be more cruel, Love, and so be kind, the story that was written for me. I requested Finrod/Caranthir in a story that included an explanation of the hatred between their houses. Zeen's story is everything I could have wanted and then some. It is poignant and dramatic and erotic, and it is very funny in places, so much that I lol'ed quite a bit while Bobby was fixing supper tonight. It was one of those stories where you look at the word count, think, "Oh, I'm going to be a while reading this," and then it's over way too soon. I could have read a novel's worth of her characters and her vision of Valinor. Go read it!

I've also posted my own, for Urloth, The Sovereign and the Priest. You nerds of English usage might have noted the italics ... yes, it ended up 40,000+ words, safely in the territory of a novella. Go ahead and throw rotten things at me. I know I am long-winded and an overachiever. ;)

Anyway, here is the summary:

Long ago in Valinor, Finrod and Celegorm faced opposing expectations, one a symbol of Eldarin potential and the other abandoned to a life of leisure, and neither fully certain of his place among the Noldor. Now, after the Dagor Bragollach, their fates collide when Celegorm and Curufin, fleeing the destruction of their realm, take harbor in Nargothrond. As both work to mend the myriad hurts between their houses, each discovers a secret about the other and, most surprising of all, the desire that grows between them. But as each of their oaths begin to call, their growing love might not survive the inevitability of their fates.

This is very much an adult story (Finrod/Celegorm) and also contains elements of dubious consent, so if either of those are likely to bother you, you'll probably want to skip this one.

The Sovereign and the Priest is on the SWG and AO3.

  • I read yours and it is absolutely lovely. I'll review later tonight. I am such a glutton that I am reading Zeen's now. I agree with you. It is a delightful story. I got a good one also--a very subtle restrained Finrod and Curufin at Nargothrond--darkish, of course. Finrod is getting a work out tonight! He needs a little love. I always leave him alone and frustrated in my stories.
    • I noticed in hearing various chatter about SinS that Finrod was getting a lot of love this time around! My namesake is happy! :D

I am amazed that you're through mine already! It took me the whole afternoon to read and edit before posting.
  • It was my first time with a fic exchange like this, too (well, participating as a writer). They scared me before, though I'm glad I did one.

The story I got was perfect. Orodreth/Caranthir, with a strong-willed Orodreth. I grinned the whole way through reading it.

I need to read everyone else's, though when I get the time is going to be the question. It sounds like there's a ton of terrific stories out there. :D
    • I've been on the verge of signing up for various Slashy exchanges so many times in the past, but I always have myriad obligations that come before being able to write, and I would never sign up for something that I wasn't 99% certain I could complete. (That 1% being the kinds of circumstances that one can't possibly foresee.) I like challenges that are nothing near what I'd write normally. This pairing and the elements Urloth requested were waaay off my usual radar, but she jolted my muses in such a way that now they're thinking of more stories to tell in this particular corner of the Felakverse ... :D

I can't wait to read some of the other stories that were written for this. Now to find the time!
      • I've just always been too nervous that my recipient wouldn't like whatever I wrote. My request was actually pretty near and dear to my heart (I love writing cracky pairings, especially trying to figure out ways to at least hint at them making sense). :D

        That's my problem too!
  • Oh my gosh, I will go and read yours asap! I write Finrod and Celegorm, so this will be an absolute treat! Off I go!
    • I did not request to know my recipient ahead of time, but when I saw the pairing, I was certain that it was you! :D
      • Oh, no not me :) I don't participate, (Three WIP's - no time!) but I know Urloth likes Celegorm and Finrod, so I was thrilled when I saw she'd asked for it, as I don't see that pairing at all. That is the only problem with rare pairings - lack of fic. It was a real treat!
  • Amazing, Dawn! I really look forward to reading it--I hope I can manage at least the first chapter tonight.
    • Thank you. :D It's much longer than I intended. (If I had a dollar for every time I said that about a piece of writing, I could probably quit my job and actually become a writer! :D)
      • I read the first two chapters and they're great! (I'm having to take things a bit slowly--this week I don't think I can take too much darkness at once before bedtime...)
  • Definitely gonna have to check this one out! and yours too hehe! I'm glad that you decided to join in with the fun as well, it was quite a showing this time.

I was very pleased with what I received as well and it went beyond expectations. I had felt a little let down in the past with a couple stories I received but eidolon_writes is impressive. I checked out a bunch of her other stories and was blown away, too.

Like you, I got a little wordy... but you surpassed me in that. Some folks were giving me the HOLY MOLEY look when I said mine ended up at nearly 40 microsoft word pages. Rhapsy was a great beta and took the daunting task but she acknowledge too how I wrote it couldn't be done any other way in leaving anything out.

I also got another plot bunny out of writing it that I may have to try for a NaNo because it will prove to be VERY lengthy from what I have in mind.
