The (Cyber) Bag of Weasels

bread and puppet

"About as much fun as a bag of weasels"...when I first saw this Irish adage, it made me think of the life of a writer: sometimes perilous, sometimes painful, certainly interesting. My paper journal has always been called "The Bag of Weasels." This is the Bag of Weasels' online home.

The network is out at work again, which means no email, no Internet, no nuthin' until they get it fixed, which could be tomorrow or could be two weeks from now. I still have access at home, yes, but it is hard to manage everything in the couple of hours of free time at home, so if you sent me an email and I haven't replied, or left a comment and I haven't replied, it is because the wire to our great & wonderful State network is lying on the lawn again. Luckily, it is not summer so they shouldn't run over it with the lawnmower like they did last summer.

Meanwhile, work without a network is hopelessly bland. I actually spent a good amount of time playing 3D Pinball from the games that come with the Windows package. But hey, Meryth got a high score of something like 2 million.

Hopefully, I'll go in tomorrow and everything will be up and running. Since our last outage lasted two weeks, I won't hold my breath.
  • Is jealous.

I dream of the network and the phones going down, but I suppose Boss Lady would ask why I didn't use the cell phone for my meetings. And I'm compulsive enough to back up my calendar on my PDA, so no excuses there either.

Or I might be expected to actually produce something since the phone and email distractions were offline.

Still it's a nice dream, though I suspect if it happened in RL I'd get rather twitchy, constantly checking for everything to come back online.

    2 million? Very impressive score!
    • Over the summer, we were without network for two whole weeks. Which was awesome in that it meant that there wasn't much to do...but when it came back up, I had about sixty warrants to run. *wince* And it gets boring real fast, having to sit in an office for eight hours with nothing to do. I got tired of writing for eight hours pretty fast.

The good thing about guv'ment work is that people call, you say, "Computers are down," and they say, "Okay," and leave you alone! It's like, "We didn't really expect you to be working anyway!"

      2 million? Very impressive score!

      Meryth thanks you. ;)
  • A high score of 2 million?

Yikes, I hope they repair the network soon. :-/

    I'll miss you!
    • Awww...thank you! *hugs*

It's fixed, though I spent most of yesterday (hold onto something sturdy because this is shocking) actually working, so it might as well have still been down. I mean, I didn't get anything truly productive done, like writing. ;)

A high score of 2 million?

Yeah, in real "Lord of the Rings pinball," my high score is 10 million! Meryth is still a newby, though. ;)

And 10 mil still wasn't enough for a freakin' free game.
  • Stupid internet cable.
    • Stupid guv'ment cable! How many times has it been down since I've been there? Chopped up once by stupid guv'ment lawnmowers??

      Well, it's fixed now....
  • I think you must be using the same internet suppliers as we do at work.
...in which case the problem will never be fixed, until you´ve given the stupid twits a million chances to fix it and after one year in agony YOU FINALLY REALISE THEY DON´T GIVE A CRAP ABOUT YOUR PROBLEM AND THE ONLY WAY TO SOLVE IT IS TO FIND ANOTHER SUPPLIER!!!

    *glances suspiciously at coffee cup*
    Erm...
    Or something of the kind.
    ;o)
    • LMAO!!! You have experience with this, I presume?

Our problem is that our supplier is the government...and we all know how that goes. I mean, these are the people who shut down our network last summer because they ran over the wire with a lawnmower. No one thought, "Doh! Wire on the lawn! I should move that before rolling the lawnmower over it!"

      *headdesk*

But our Internet goes down every few months for whatever reason, at which point my boss has to wrangle with our IT people to fix it, so...yeah. Been there too. ;)
  • *fingers crossed*
  • OMG, I had 3D Pinball on my computer all this time and didn't know it?! Now you've stopped two of us from working! :-P

BTW, a very belated thanks for the Christmas candy. *Looks guilty* It occurred to me today that we never thanked you or even told you it arrived, but it was here in time for Christmas and, as always, it was a big hit. We especially liked those hard candies near the bottom; maybe they were toffee? Mmmm, good...
    • I didn't know that I even had games on my work comp till Johnny told me that he was playing Solitaire, he was so bored, and I said, "Where did you get Solitaire?!"

And he said, "We have lots of games: Freecell, Spider Solitaire, Hearts, Pinball...."

I said, "Well, I don't think I'd be into any of those," and slunk back to my office.

Unfortunately, pinball has music, so when I started it up like two seconds later, Johnny laughed his ass off. Boo. :^P

And you're welcome for the candy! I didn't expect any thank yous...you know that I have to send candy at Christmas. :) I don't know the exact name of those candies you liked; Mom made those! She did all the easy stuff and left me with chocolate-covered cherries!

(Btw, your icon is...I'm not quite sure. It just is. :^D)
  • Teh suxx0rs. If it makes you feel better, the school's VPN software has a glitch that makes it impossible to install. Luckily I have Ye Olde LAN Cable.
    • Sounds like the guv'ment. Today I went in and my stupid scanner didn't work. Last week, CJIS was only printing every other page that I told it to print, so I'd print a ten-page RAPS sheet and have pages 1, 3, 5, 7, 9...very annoying. I'd have to hit PRINT twice, and since CJIS runs slow as shit anyway...boo.

I'm generally pissed at technology at the moment. My USB key decided to corrupt between work and home today, so I lost all of my work on the HoMe project for the day as well as three chapters to the AMC prequel. *fuck*
      • As in your flash drive?! Wtf. That's not allowed. I would be very pissed too. I'm glad that my new shiny computer burns CDs, so I can back up stuff that way.

Speaking of HoME though, now that I am back at school where my BoLT I is, I *did* find that quote I was telling you about. So I'm not completely crazy. Yay!
