New Residents in the House of Felagund!

The (Cyber) Bag of Weasels

bread and puppet

"About as much fun as a bag of weasels"...when I first saw this Irish adage, it made me think of the life of a writer: sometimes perilous, sometimes painful, certainly interesting. My paper journal has always been called "The Bag of Weasels." This is the Bag of Weasels' online home.

Some of you know that my laptop is called Pengolodh, Lord of Gondolin. Well, yesterday, Bobby's new laptop arrived. It shall be called Rumil, Lord of Tirion.

Of course, Bobby didn't really go for this. When prompted to give his computer a name, he typed, "JOE." I said, "Joe?! WTF is that?" Personally, I think that Rumil, Lord of Tirion is far superior.

Additionally, we spent the past weekend setting up an aquarium and now have four fish in it. The fish will be named after Feanorians. Bobby's idea, not mine. (I swear!) So far, they have not been assigned names because we are getting more fish this weekend and will see which personalities fit which fish. Although I have decided to call the featherfin catfish "Maedhros" because he's my favorite.

Of course, the fish like to hide, so I don't think that you can actually see any of them in this picture. We have a featherfin catfish, a black ghost knife, a bala shark, and a plecostomus.

And here's Bobby with Rumil, Lord of Tirion on the couch:

Isn't he cute? Bobby's okay too. :^P

In other news, I have finally finished the second step of the Meryth and Talban models that I am painting for Jenni. (They are actually Elladan and Elrohir models, but Elven twins are Elven twins....) The first step, of course, is cleaning and spraying a basecoat. The second stage is to paint a gray base over top of which the color will be added. This makes the colors appear properly, for one, and also familiarizes me with the details that I will one day soon have to paint and shade.

Here's a close-up:

And here they are with my water cup, to show the scale of the models. (Which are pretty frickin' small):

Hopefully, next week, I'll have them colored and finished pictures posted!
  • Mmm...I'd have Rúmil sitting on my knee any time!

Your fish tank is gorgeous! Very clean! (Ours has a lot of algae...but on the plus side it also has a bright pink and very active shrimp!)

Little Meryth and Talban are adorable, and so's the zebra mug!
    • If it's any consolation, the fishtank has been set up for less than a week, so no time to grow algae. :^D Though we have a plecostomus to take care of that anyway. Bobby tells me that he "believes in plecostomus." He's the fishtank expert, not me!

Little Meryth and Talban are adorable, and so's the zebra mug!

Thank you! I'm a sucker for anything with zebras. A guy who lived about ten minutes away from me growing up had two zebras on his farm, and I was enamored ever after!
  • May Rumil have a long and productive life!

Your new tank looks great. What other fish are you planning to put into it?
    • We haven't fully decided yet. It's to be a semi-aggressive tank...obviously, since they're to be named after Feanorians!
  • Yay for fish and new computers! Actually, my computer had Issues the other night, and I honestly thought "Oh great, it wants to be called Rumil Lord of Tirion for real!"

My betta fish does not have a name. Besides "fish!" that is...We could never think of an appropriate one. However, it makes me want to get more fish, and name them Alpha, Gamma, Delta...
  • OMG, Bobby's hair is sooo long now! Goodness! Methinks I won't recognise anybody when I come home... :-P
    • Yes, he's growing out his hair! He might even grow it long enough for a ponytail. In which case, I will get him very drunk, put it in braids, give him some prosthetic pointy ears, and have a grand ol' time! :^D

I look the same, if it's any consolation. Long hair, skinny-wth-a-big-@$$, and too much jewelry. :^P
  • Ooh... nice fishtank. I used to keep fish in the same tank as my turtle. We went away for two weeks and I didn't leave them enough food (because I'm really not sure how much they need) and when I got back they'd eaten the turtle (that's not a typo. The fishies ate the turtle right down to the skeleton). I gave them away soon after that, because having carnivorous fish in my home disturbs me.
    • Oh my goodness. Were they aggressive fish? That's pretty incredible. (Poor turtle.... :( )

The closest we've had to that was the time that Bobby was keeping pirahnas and got bitten by one. He said, "Well, now I can officially say that I've been bitten by a pirahna...."
  • Eeee, miniature models! I bought a bunch once and painted them as the sons of Fëanor instead of the colours prescribed by the packaging... (The originally-supposed-to-be-Elrohir will never, ever forgive me for cutting off one of his little pewter hands, I'm afraid.)

Of course Rumil is a far better name than Joe!
    • (The originally-supposed-to-be-Elrohir will never, ever forgive me for cutting off one of his little pewter hands, I'm afraid.)

Awwww...poor Elrohir/Maedhros. My Maedhros model still has both hands, actually. It was a competition model, and I could just see losing because he was missing a hand and they didn't realize that it was intentional. (And after spending 70 hours on that model too! I would not have been happy.) Plus, I'm a sap and I didn't think that I could amputate Maedhros's hand. Fingon I am not, I suppose. ;)

Of course Rumil is a far better name than Joe!

Thank you! *pointed look at Bobby*

Eeee, how cool, THAT´S how it´s done!
My laptop is called Frodo, the small and portable one. ;o)
    • Lol! That's great! And I suppose that with a name like that, you can also excuse the occasional bouts of insanity. ;)
  • Man, not only is Brandon's hair getting long so is Bobby's-what's up with that? Is it like the "trend" for guys to be letting their hair grow long? LoL:)

We want to get a pet for the babies, it'll probably be a puppy of some kind:p

I don't remember if my laptop has a name, methinks it does-I haven't had it that long...but I'll be bringing it along tomorrow to show you some pics I took of Jesse and Chelsea painting:) Also, my camera, of course-I HAVE to take pictures when we see Aunt dawn(and hopefully one day in the near future we'll meet Aunt Sharon and I'll get pictures then too)
    • Yes, along with Bobby's change of heart in terms of work and priorities and even politics (a bit), he has turned more into...me. Scary, huh? :^D But whereas he used to be very proper in a lot of regards (compared to me, anyway), he is loosening up a lot and adopting what might best be called a "Caribbean attitude." ;) He's actually considering growing his hair long enough to put in a ponytail after I teased him and said that he should become a ponytailed PhD like Sean Connery in Medicine Man. And he told me last night that the weekend after we get our certification cards for SCUBA, he is getting a shark tatoo with a dive flag on his shoulder.

Personally, I like long-haired men. (Not like it's obvious from my *ahem* obsession with Elves and all.... ;^D)

Btw, Aunt Sharon is coming back to the US for about two weeks at Thanksgiving. ;) She'll be really busy packing up the rest of her stuff to ship to England, but maybe we can work something out to get together!
  • Squee for the new inhabitants of your house! I remember the times when we had fish too. We had lots of them in the tank, but I have no idea how to name them in English. My favorite one was black and long bodied, though he was also quite fat because he was the cheekiest one of them and he always came up to the surface when I fed them. His name was Justin. And why does it not surprise me that you gave your favorite one the name Maedhros? ;)

Wow, the twins look impressive, even in this state and despite the fact that they are so small. Honestly, I don't know how you see the details when the models are so little, even compared to the mug. (Speaking of which, I've snatched a green and blue mug with some random silly looking Disney character, from work.) The blades that the figurines hold in their hands make me think of Noldorin warriors rather than Meryth and Talban, though. I can't wait to check out how work on them progresses.

Three cheers for "Rumil, Lord of Tirion"! Though the real Lords of Tirion are grumbling about this. ;p
    • Bobby's the fish man in our family; he's kept tanks almost since we started dating. At one point, he had three tanks: a ten-gallon community tank, a fifty-gallon aggressive tank, and a five-gallon pirahna tank. (Sorry for the stoopid non-metric volumes, but I am too lazy to translate! :^P) Since our apartment is really too small (and our lives too chaotic) for a dog or cat, we figured fish would be a good low-maintenance pet, especially considering the education we're now pursuing!

      And Justin...that is so cute!

It helps that I have extremely good vision. I'm sitting about three meters away from a bulletin board in my office with memos on it written in sizes 12 to 14 fonts, and I can read most of them. And my artistic tendencies have always leaned toward very detail-oriented work, so I was a natural at miniatures painting. Also, my detail brush is squintingly small; I'll have to include it in my next round of pictures.

(Speaking of which, I've snatched a green and blue mug with some random silly looking Disney character, from work.)

Stealing from work. *tsk tsk* I never do anything like, say, print stories for revision on the State printers, using State paper and ink. Never. 08^)

The blades that the figurines hold in their hands make me think of Noldorin warriors rather than Meryth and Talban, though. I can't wait to check out how work on them progresses.

Well, they're from the Games Workshop line of Lord of the Rings models. These two are actually Elladan and Elrohir, but since they were Elves and twins and weren't wearing metal armor, I figured that they fit will the characters of Meryth and Talban. But that explains why the blades have a Tolkien look to them (or at least a Peter Jackson look!) In reality, Meryth rarely uses a blade at all but prefers a bow. And I'm terrible at altering metal models and only decent at sculpting, so I left him as is. :^P

I'm going to try to post pictures each step of the way. Not like most people will be interested, but I think it gives a good idea as to the process.
  • I love the little diver in your fish tank! LOL! I have a walrus in mine!

Awww...Bobby and Rúmil look so happy together!

SQUEEEEE!! The Meryth and Talban models look great!

Talban is going to make his post now! He thinks he will send it to you by e-mail too in case you're having a boring day and it might make you laugh.

I've never seen walruses for fishtanks around here. That's pretty cool! Our diver is animated; his treasure chest opens and closes. Bobby had to say, "Look, it's you, Dawn!" and I said, "I hope my dive gear isn't so daft-looking!"

SQUEEEEE!! The Meryth and Talban models look great!

Thanks! They'll look better with some color...I hope. ;)

Well considering that I was so uninspired today that I took a 20-minute nap sitting at my desk...Talbie's post was much appreciated! *hugs Tal and Meryth both for being so cute and sweet*
  • Bobby's idea, not mine.

And we are supposed to believe this? ;)
  • Fiiiiiiiiiish....Sharon will tell you I love fishies, I actually love most thing associated with the water but me and fish get along like old friends :-D

My dad kept fish for most of my childhood, mostly exotic fish and I used to love playing with them....although I think I killed one of them the year I had a really bad flu and my parents kept trying to make me take these soluble pills that I didn't like so I kept putting them in the fish tank when they left the room....so anyway, I think fishies all over the world have forgiven my 12 year old self *runs away*
    • Oh, that's such a cute story! Well, maybe the fish didn't think so.... ;)

But I'm sure they've forgiven you. All the same, I won't say anything to our guys. (We got four more tonight! *squee*)
  • Oh, looks like Petey Pablo got replaced! I suppose it's alright, though, because you got a Plecostomus. Those things are awesome.

And Bobby's only copying off of my style. That's right, I started the long hair thing! Okay.... maybe I didn't, but still!
