B2MeM Prompts Open

The (Cyber) Bag of Weasels

bread and puppet

"About as much fun as a bag of weasels"...when I first saw this Irish adage, it made me think of the life of a writer: sometimes perilous, sometimes painful, certainly interesting. My paper journal has always been called "The Bag of Weasels." This is the Bag of Weasels' online home.

B2MeM Prompts Open

I'd imagine most everyone has probably seen me post about this already, but since the prompts are being claimed even faster than I anticipated, then I want to be sure that anyone who wants to participate in this year's Back to Middle-earth Month gets a chance to sign up before that perfect prompt is claimed by someone else! :)

This year's format for B2MeM is a compilation, meaning that participants will sign up for a prompt ahead of time, have at least a month-and-a-half to craft a piece of writing or art, and the results will be revealed slowly over the course of the month of March. (There will be a review challenge to go along with it, so we hope that our writers and artists will get lots of love for the hard work their pour into their projects. :) The theme this year is Seasons of Middle-earth, but don't think that all of the prompts are strongly oriented in the seasons; we interpreted the idea of "seasons" both literally and figuratively, so while there are prompts related to weather and holidays, there are also more open-ended prompts that one could write without mentioning literal seasons at all. I am sitting on my hands write now because I always pick prompts that fill in where needed, and there are some really awesome ones that I'm hoping might just happen to be needed by the time I get to select mine! :D

The event guidelines are here and the prompt claim page is here.

  • I am sitting on my hands write now because I always pick prompts that fill in where needed, and there are some really awesome ones that I'm hoping might just happen to be needed by the time I get to select mine! :D

I almost missed all of the ones that I might have been able to write, but I slipped in just under the wire (whew!). Aren't you going to accept doubles on some of those after the prompts have all been filled? I did not want to wait to find out I was out-of-luck, so I picked the only one left I thought I could write.
    • There are 68 prompts total, and each can be filled by a writer or artist (so 136 possible fills and we've had just over 20 claims so far). I doubt they'll all be filled; that would be a BINGO-level of popularity, which I don't foresee! :) So at this time, we're not planning to allow multiple claims for the compilation, although anyone can write for any of the prompts during March itself. It just won't be part of the compilation. (We're going to set aside a day or two each week for non-compilation pieces, and of course, they can be posted freely outside of the b2mem community.)
      • It must have something to do with the way the prompts display on my screen (blown up to more than double the regulation size). I interpreted those categories/groupings of different prompts as one choice and not multiple choices grouped together. I thought I claimed only one and you indicated to me privately that I had chosen several. So the way my eye scanned the screen I thought the majority had been claimed already.
    • I did not want to wait to find out I was out-of-luck

I know what you mean - I commented as fast as possible too, even though I know there are fewer artists than writers. I'm glad you got one you could write!
      • Apparently I read the prompts wrong also. See Dawn's response to me above. I am hopeless at this stuff. Yay! I am so excited to see new artwork from you.
  • Nope, I hadn't seen anything about this before (OMG IT'S ONLY JANUARY! *flail*), so thank you for the heads-up!
    • Good--I'm glad I posted here too then! (I always worry about overdoing it with promotion, like everyone's secretly screaming at me, "Dammit, Dawn, we know already!!1!" :)
      • I don't have the b2mem LJ comm friended because it tends to swamp my friendslist in March, so that's why I'm blissfully ignorant to anything that's going on there unless it's actually, well, B2MeM (when I check the community every day). :)

I do have another question. One of the prompts would nicely fit with a story idea I've been having in mind for a while, but that story is definitely going to need many, many chapters - more than I can hope to write within a month (or, likely, even a year). I can see myself managing the introductory chapter and maybe one more, but not more. Do you think something of the sort would count as completing the prompt, if the story is only completed much later? Otherwise, I think it's wiser if I don't claim it and just use it to (hopefully) finally start writing that story, privately.

    • (I am facepalming right now because I intended to add this very question to the FAQ and totally forgot. But now you have reminded me, so I will! :)

If what you could get finished could stand on their own, that would be fine. If not, it'd probably be best to select another prompt and then maybe post the first few chapters for this prompt as a non-compilation story.
      • Aye, there's the rub. I have no clue whether the first chapter could stand on its own or not! So I'm going to stay on the safe side, and away from the prompt. Thank you for clearing it up!
    • I have the comm friended-- but I also have it set up so that only the tags I need to see (the mod tags) show up on my friends page. To do that, click watch, and then click modify watch. That way, you'll get the announcements but avoid the flood.
      • Oooh, thank you!
        • You're welcome! (I hope you figured it out; I realized rereading that just now that my instructions weren't the clearest about the last step.)
          • All the information I needed was that, via "modify watch", I could select specific tags that I wanted to follow. (So far, I've pretty much just clicked "watch" and then "OK" without bothering to read the rest...) So you were clear enough! :)
  • I hope there are some of the ones you would like too! :D And I'm glad to see how many people were just waiting like me to snatch up a good inspirational prompt - I'm looking forward to getting started on mine. :D
    • I got some claims within the first few minutes, so there were definitely some people standing by! :D Yours was one of the first! (You got your first choice, btw, I just haven't been able to send out official confirmations yet because it's been all I can do to keep up with the chart!) I posted intentionally around noon, my time, because I knew that America and Europe would both be awake by then! :D
      • I saw my name on the chart, and assumed that all was well in the world! ♥ I had just gotten home from the theatre when I saw the post, so I was worried it had been up for ages by then - luckily it hadn't. :D
  • As you say you're worrying about "overdoing it with promotion"--you were planning to post an announcement to the silwritersguild as well? Because I think some people might be watching that more closely than b2mem. But I realize there hasn't been time!
    • I knew I was forgetting something! Off to do it now ... :D
    • I love your prompt and can't wait to see what you do with it.
      • I have no clue yet what I'm going to do with it! But at least, while I feverishly rack my brain, I'm going to be listening to music I like!
I guess it would be indiscreet to ask whether you know yet who you are going to trap together?
        • At this point I have a couple of ideas with Glorfindel as the common thread. How long that'll last...
  • hrymfaxe and I just talked about the prompts and we both got giddy and remembered the good old times, so I think it's the first positive of the B2MeM project :) Besides, is it good or bad that I spotted my prompt, looked at it closely and now I have a whole herd of bunnies gnawing at my ankles, lol.

    Good luck!
  • Looks like you might be writing an autumn prompt? There seem to be the most gaps there.
I do hope you will end up with a prompt you really like and not just one that is needed!
    • It looks like it will be autumn, yes! :) Autumn's had only 10 claims, compared to a whopping 23 for winter! (The funny thing is that we modpeople initially ended up with the most prompt ideas for winter and had to do the most heavy cutting there, so apparently winter is inspirational for Tolkien fanwriters and artists?)

I can be inspired by just about anything, so I'm not worried about what I end up with. :) Also, having had a hand in making or selecting the prompts helps! I just skimmed the autumn list and there's one in particular that I really liked ... although I'll probably jinx myself now and it will be claimed!
