Bobby and I Have Reached a New Low for Nerdsomeness!

The (Cyber) Bag of Weasels

bread and puppet

"About as much fun as a bag of weasels"...when I first saw this Irish adage, it made me think of the life of a writer: sometimes perilous, sometimes painful, certainly interesting. My paper journal has always been called "The Bag of Weasels." This is the Bag of Weasels' online home.

Bobby and I Have Reached a New Low for Nerdsomeness!

Just a few minutes ago, Bobby and I were sitting back to back in the study in total silence, "talking" back in forth over Gmail chat. We were RPing our characters for our gaming group's latest D&D game. I blame Patrick, our DM, for enticing us with extra experience points for developing the storyline of the game or doing background work on characters so that we have fallen to this new low. Since I am the unofficial story writer each week, then Bobby needed a way to get in on the extra XP, and this idea was born.

Before that, our worst transgression was the time I was "beta'ing" one of Bobby's essays for grad school; I was in the study and he was in the basement, both on our laptops, and I had a question, so we started chatting back and forth over Gmail before one of us thought to ask, "Wait, aren't we in the same house?" and Bobby came upstairs, pulled over a chair, and we actually spoke to each other as we worked side by side on his paper.

One final note: I am alive. I know that I have comments to answer on my last two posts; I started to answer some through a circumventor at work the other day, but it runs so damn slow that I lost patience. I have been working on a pretty major upcoming thing for SWG*, as well as getting ready to give my journal a pretty major overhaul**, so this hasn't left much free time for playing online. What have y'all been up to? I haven't been able to read my flist in weeks, so if you have news or any posts you think might interest me, please tell me about it! :)

* That should be announced tomorrow
** This should be announced some time in the next few weeks

Also, I still owe a post about the lake trip. Suffice to say, for now, that it was awesome. More details forthcoming. :)
  • It's good to know that you're alive.

As for new lows in nerdsomeness ... I'm going to be 33 this year, and I've just offered an imaginary pink unicorn on my lj.

It says its name is Schrödinger. But I think it's a girl.
    • Hey, unicorns are awesome! Nelyo still travels everywhere with me and talks to certain close friends and family who have long-accepted that I am weird and possess quite a posse of imaginary friends ... congrats on Schrödinger! Nelyo's ears are pricked with interest as the two (imaginary) female unicorns that live in our house, Flour and That Other Female, don't seem to like him much anymore.

The unicorns you sent me look over my desk, btw, and threaten me into keeping it somewhat tidy. ;)
  • I have long since stopped measuring nerdsomeness. ;) It appears to only go one way...

I'm glad you had a good trip to the lake! And I'm intrigued by the SWG thing. :)
    • That is very true about nerdsomeness. Well, I suppose you have some very young people who become less nerdy as they become adults and are socially pressured into becoming "cool" (i.e., utterly lacking in imagination), but nerdy adults, I have found, only become more nerdy because they find other nerdy adults, and nerdsomeness is synergistic with additional nerdsomeness. This is a proven scientific fact. And the Internet only facilitates all of that further because it lets nerds in, say, Denmark and the US talk to each other via nerdy sites like LiveJournal. ;)

Wow, as this is turning into a dissertation ... *ahem*

I will conclude by adding that I will be announcing the SWG thing tomorrow. I'm chomping at the bit to do it now, but I promised my co-mods tonight for last-minute feedback, so it'll be tomorrow morning at the earliest (so early afternoon for you) if they don't have any additional changes to suggest.
  • What have y'all been up to?

Oh well. Still writing graduation paper thingy. Still going slightly mad (am doing 6 pages a day average and slowly losing all I have left of my social competences... I guess I need to leave a "still alive" note more than you do, actually! ;-P). It's strange how this manages to make me feel alternately smart, eloquent and intellectual (10 percent of the time) and absolutely stark raving mad (90 percent). Please don't worry, though. It's my normal working mode, really. And in 30 days from now it's friggin' OVER!!! Yay!

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with a bit (or lot) of nerdsomeness as long as it's fun :). (I've recently developed a nice little obsession with weird avantgarde movie directors like Peter Greenaway that no one understands but that I enjoy nonetheless... :-D)

I'm also completely behind on f-list stuff or any kind of f-locked posts of said f-list...
    • Maybe we should have a joint flist catch-up day? ;) Thirty days about spells the end of the SWG chaos for me as well!

Oh, how I miss those heady days of working non-stop on school stuff ... Not. Well, a little, actually. I think that's part of the reason why I fill my life now with nerdsomeness!

Anyway, good luck to you and I look forward to see more of that lovely icon in thirty days! *hugs*
  • You and Bobby sound a little like this cartoon.

What have y'all been up to?

Ha. Ha ha. Ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Go read my latest post, titled "Drama! In Real Life." That's what I've been up to.

    • Indeed, that's the basic idea ... but we're much better spellers! And we absolutely do not use netspeak! (I'm afraid that's grounds for divorce in the House of Felagund.)
  • Before that, our worst transgression was the time I was "beta'ing" one of Bobby's essays for grad school; I was in the study and he was in the basement, both on our laptops, and I had a question, so we started chatting back and forth over Gmail before one of us thought to ask, "Wait, aren't we in the same house?" and Bobby came upstairs, pulled over a chair, and we actually spoke to each other as we worked side by side on his paper.

LOL We're known to do that for years. It is quite handy when your kid is asleep and you don't want to shout up the stairs ;)

What have y'all been up to?

I had an overdosis of Finrod *blames Tarion* ;c)
  • HAHAHA!! Don't worry, I am laughing with you, not at you. ;)

As for what I've been up to...Louis's first show (hahaha), back to classes, and my crazy colt. Who has serious difficulty keeping four on the floor.

Slightly more detailed run down here.
  • True confession: I haven't engaged in an intrahouse gmail chat with my husband, but I have indulged in something just as wild and crazy with another man!

When Kevin visited last month, he set up a faux message board - meant as a humorous spoof - for a group of runners. While he sat at our mainframe in the office alcove, I was but a mere 12 feet away on the sofa with my laptop while we threw around foul but funny neologisms on the message board and laughed raucously.

    It was hawt! ;^D

    • Kinky ... ;)

I can't top that one. Sometimes I chat with my fellow gamers on IM or bantering back in forth in email, but never in the same house much less the same room!

Nope, I play it safe by only indulging in such risque behavior with my own husband, like the good, innocent girl you all know that I am.
  • Darn, must think up of something nerdy to top that! (On a sidenote, is Gmail chat better fun than say, IM or Yahoo? I have no idea mainly because my gmail address is used for file-sending and is furtively guarded over. *is a dork*)

I saw the B2MeM thingy! Was that the major SWG thing? I felt a flutter of inspiration and finger-itching to *create*, somewhere near the region of my stomach this morning when I saw it (or maybe it was the butterflies of Doom heralding my Law exam). Was v. excited, seeing as I haven't felt that spark since the 30th anniversary of Sil. Yay!

And the lake trip! Glad that it was awesome- will there be pictures? As for moi, I've been currently swamped with exams and exam stress and general unpleasant family things. Bleh. Haff missed you. *hugs*
    • Sees your Nelyo and raises you mine. ;)

On a sidenote, is Gmail chat better fun than say, IM or Yahoo?

I kind of like Gmail better since I'm not too much of a chat person to start with. I like that Gmail doesn't open a separate window at the bottom of my screen (since I usually have at least five open to start and often need to switch between them and get annoyed when all of my website files collapse into a single Notepad, for example). I also like that the chat window is tiny--just enough space to write in--and doesn't get overly cluttered with avatars and special things that I don't really use. Of course, I've only ever used YIM, not AIM for many, many years. (As in back when you could hear your phone dialing out to use the Internet! :^D)

I saw the B2MeM thingy! Was that the major SWG thing?

Yes! I do hope that flutter of inspiration comes to fruition! ;)

And the lake trip! Glad that it was awesome- will there be pictures?

Absolutely! I really need to sit down and write that ... also, to download the pictures from my camera. And I haven't posted pictures of Lancelot since he was a tiny baby ... ai.

Best of luck with your exams! I don't miss that headache. (Even though I do miss school, just not the life of a student.) Also, I am still mulling over your story request, just to let you know that I have not forgotten. *big hugs*
