Questions for My Flist ...

The (Cyber) Bag of Weasels

bread and puppet

"About as much fun as a bag of weasels"...when I first saw this Irish adage, it made me think of the life of a writer: sometimes perilous, sometimes painful, certainly interesting. My paper journal has always been called "The Bag of Weasels." This is the Bag of Weasels' online home.

Questions for My Flist ...

Two things:

First of all, I have a piece of creative non-fiction that I need help critiquing. Normally, I go through Critters for my fiction critiquing needs, but since this is creative non-fiction--versus speculative fiction--then I can't for this one.

People on my flist can find the piece (called "Thirty-Three") here. As I said, it is creative non-fiction, so it is true, i.e. it is about me. (omg self-insert!!!11!1!!) It's thirty-three drabbles about how Bobby and I met and eventually got married. Anyone who feels like ripping apart some of my writing or just offering opinions, I'd really appreciate it. I intend to try to sell the piece and would like some thoughts before I toss it out to be chewed over by editors. Please email me or comment here if you're interested.

Secondly, I am putting together a survey as part of a research project about the canon of J.R.R. Tolkien. I'd like some input on experimental design. I'll probably do this through Google documents, so if you'd like me to include you on the eventual permissions list, please let me know. (I'll need an email, of course, to do this, so if I don't have your email, drop me a line if you'd like to be added.) Once the project is finished, I will of course give credit to everyone who has helped me. It's just been several years now since I've designed a social science research project; I'd like a few extra opinions before I try to get a hundred responses to the survey! I'm not looking for any particular education or experience, just some willing souls to let me know if my questions make sense or to suggest some items that might be missing.

My email is DawnFelagund@gmail.com.

And I'm waaaay behind again on answering comments. I'll try to catch up in the next few days, promise! :)
  • I'd love to be involved in the Tolkien survey. My e-mail's doublehandb@yahoo.com :]
  • Dawn, I don't have much professional experience constructing surveys, but I have had to write a lot for the MEFAs post-mortiems (morti?). In any event, I'd love to help both as a survey taker and survey-critiquer. This is my email, in case you've misplaced it.
  • I'm around for both :) And take it easy!
  • I'll gladly help with the Tolkien survey. :) My email addy is kathy.binks(at)gmail(dot)com
  • I'd love to take a look at your research project. But I'm very sorry, right now I can't help with the story. I'll have more time after October 16. If it can wait that long, I would love to give you some concrit.
  • There are some people I can't criticize, concrit or otherwise - and less so when it's such a personal piece with images and (possibly) in-jokes and allusions your average LJ reader won't catch. Sorry I can't be of help here - I read the stories and they definitely didn't fail to move me, but I can't say anything more specific.

As for the Tolkien project - you know my emai. I'm in if you want me. :)
  • I'd love to help out too with the research project. :D I think you still have my email but if not its trekqueen@gmail.com
  • I can help nitpick creative nonfiction. :)
  • Count me in for the survey. I'm not sure I'll have time to read the other pieces carefully enough.
