The (Cyber) Bag of Weasels

bread and puppet

"About as much fun as a bag of weasels"...when I first saw this Irish adage, it made me think of the life of a writer: sometimes perilous, sometimes painful, certainly interesting. My paper journal has always been called "The Bag of Weasels." This is the Bag of Weasels' online home.

Thanks to all who played! If you would like to guess which single fact on a list of lies about me is true, the meme may be found here.

The correct answer was "#2: I have won awards for miniatures painting." Neither of them were major awards but a first place for a large model in a Generals' Competition and a first place for Best Single Miniature in a Rogue Trader Tournament. tehta was correct that I have mentioned this before in my LJ; about a year ago, I posted photos of the models. Yes, I still paint but rarely; at the moment, I am working on Meryth and Talban models for Jenni from our original RPG and my original novel!verse, The Midhavens.

As for the other answers:

#1: I much prefer Lord of the Rings to The Silmarillion, both as a story and as fodder for my own writing. Not surprisingly, no one guessed this as the true fact. I love LotR for opening the doors to Tolkien's work and the fantasy genre for me, but The Silmarillion will always have first place in my heart.

#3: I am quite a competent ice skater. Close! I am quite a competent rollerskater. On ice, I am a loss. The difference between feeling an edge on a narrow blade or on a broad set of wheels is drastic, and I have never quite accustomed myself to it. While some are cross-competent, few skilled rollerskaters are comfortable on ice.

#4. I am trying to talk Bobby into naming our first child "Maedhros." We do not want to have children, first of all. Secondly, I couldn't even convince him to name our big cactus "Finrod," so fat chance on a Maedhros if we were having kids!

#5. My only pet is a stuffed unicorn called "Maeglin." The stuffed unicorn's name is "Nelyo," first of all. Secondly, I have another unicorn named "Macalaure" (a.k.a. "Hape") and a unicorn named "Findekano" as well as a whole crew of muses that I consider my pets.

#6. My laptop computer has recently decided that he prefers to be addressed as "Rumil, Lord of Tirion." Again...close! My laptop is named "Pengolodh," and recently, he has insisted on being addressed as, "Pengolodh, Lord of Gondolin." To which I replied, "Well why not 'Pengolodh Lord and Loremaster of Gondolin' then?" To which Bobby snicked and answered, "Lord and Whoremaster," which Pengolodh (Lord of Gondolin) ignored. He hummed in consideration of my proposal. Bobby is in the process of ordering a new laptop, and I have suggested that he name it "Rumil, Lord of Tirion" so that we have a matched set, but he doesn't seem very keen so far. But when Bobby has a hockey game, I take my laptop and write, and I can frequently be overheard telling him, "Hold on! Let me put Pengolodh, Lord of Gondolin in the car before your hockey equipment!" I dare not address him otherwise, the keeper of my stories!

Bobby and I were unexpectedly away this weekend when my mom suggested that we spend the night at my parents' after a cookout at my aunt's house, and we decided to combine that with hiking in Gunpowder and dinner at my inlaws' to make a weekend of it. Whew. But I will reply to emails tomorrow and post comments tomorrow afternoon, when I get home from work!
  • Whee, lucky guess! It was between #2 and #6 for me, and my "eeny meeny miney mo" was kind of influenced by the fact that I'd thought I'd heard something about miniatures or painting somewhere... (#3 would have been close, except I tend to be friends with people who like catching people with little tricks like the differences between "ice" and "roller" ^_~)
    • Ah, so you caught on to my tricks! :^D I have indeed mentioned miniatures-painting in the past, though I don't talk about it too much since I don't have much time to do it anymore! When Meryth and Talban are finished for Jenni, the picspam will begin again. :^P
  • Heyhey, with an actual truth, I was able to pick out the right answer!

Wow, you want to name your cactus Finrod?? I didn't know that. Hehe! You make me laugh, you know?

And Maeglin is not a unicorn, it's your iPod! (Right?) ^_^

I can frequently be overheard telling him, "Hold on! Let me put Pengolodh, Lord of Gondolin in the car before your hockey equipment!" I dare not address him otherwise, the keeper of my stories!

ROFL!!! That's too good. I know exactly what you mean though, on the "dare not address him otherwise" part! (Except that sometimes I get ticked off and tell my computer, "Hurry up and work you stupid piece of crap!")
    • Wow, you want to name your cactus Finrod?? I didn't know that. Hehe! You make me laugh, you know?

*bows* Thank you, thank you, I'm here every Saturday. Try the manicotti and don't forget to tip your server! :^D

I wanted to name our cactus something Tolkien-related. I think I threw out "Eol" and "Finrod." Bobby wouldn't go for either, so we called him "Pablo." He's since died, so it's just as well.

(Though if I had named him "Eol," I could have thrown him off the balcony when we realized that he was officially dying. That could have been fun! Though not for the person standing beneath us....)

And Maeglin is not a unicorn, it's your iPod! (Right?) ^_^

Yes! You have a good memory! He's black and favors the song "Bizarre Love Triangle," so it fits. :^P

(Except that sometimes I get ticked off and tell my computer, "Hurry up and work you stupid piece of crap!")

I very rarely holler at Pengolodh, Lord of Gondolin. Most of my ire is directed at Comcast and their rather spotty service. :^P

      (Or fanfiction.net....)

PS--Sorry, I initially posted the wrong comment here! I write them ahead of time at work in WordPad and copy and paste, and I had another blonde moment! :^P
      • I think I threw out "Eol" and "Finrod."

Lol, talk about opposites! And he died? Wow, killing a cactus - that's impressive.

Though if I had named him "Eol," I could have thrown him off the balcony when we realized that he was officially dying.

Lol!!! That would have been really funny.

You have a good memory! He's black and favors the song "Bizarre Love Triangle," so it fits. :^P

LOL!!! It fits indeed! And I only have a good memory about people's names for their things, I think.

Most of my ire is directed at Comcast and their rather spotty service. :^P

        (Or fanfiction.net....)

Lol, yes. My internet usually works, at least lately *knock on wood*. My computer is just old and slow...it has a mind of its own. It likes to pop open the CD drive randomly.

PS--Sorry, I initially posted the wrong comment here! I write them ahead of time at work in WordPad and copy and paste, and I had another blonde moment! :^P

LOL!!! I think it's my turn to give you the wtf-icon!!! ^_^
        • Wow, killing a cactus - that's impressive.

He died fast, so I think he may have been sick to begin with. That's what we get for buying plants at the Home Depot!

We have a small cactus garden of cacti that kill each other. We started with five in there, and they have usurped each other one by one until we have one remaining (and part of the second is still living, but I touched it last night, and it's starting to get floppy.)

It likes to pop open the CD drive randomly.

Heh. Computers. Yes, my old laptop used to move the mouse and click at random, completely rearranging my desktop and changing my settings on more than one occasion!

I think it's my turn to give you the wtf-icon!!! ^_^

He's all yours if you want him! :^D
  • O sneaky Dawn!

I must admit that I never noticed the ice-skating vs. roller-skating thing. I can skate on ice (not that well, but at least I don't fall down all the time) but not on rollers.
    • Sneaky indeed! :^D

I started rollerskating when I was about three years old, with those horrific orange-and-blue things that strap onto your shoes. Well, if you had them in your area, you'd probably be too young to remember them; they were totally an '80s thing!

Ice and I do not get along. I can skate without falling but not confidently. And I hate the cold.
  • Ha. I would have guessed #2!

    Caranthir: Yea, sure.
